Margao, also known as Madgaon, is South Goa’s working town — the district’s commercial centre, with busy markets, colonial-era squares and the main railway station for the south of the state. Few visitors stay in the town itself, but many pass through it: arriving by train, heading out to the long beaches of Colva and Benaulim, or coming in for shopping and business. A self-drive car turns Margao from a transit point into a convenient base for the whole of South Goa.

Driving and parking in Margao

A busy centre. The streets around the municipal garden, the covered market and the main bus stand are congested for much of the day, with buses, autorickshaws and delivery vehicles stopping without warning. Allow extra time and avoid the centre around school and office hours where you can.

Parking in town. Spaces close to the market are limited. Look for designated or paid parking a short walk away rather than stopping on the road, and fold in mirrors on the narrower side streets. Shopping on a weekday morning is noticeably easier than in the evening.

Station traffic. Approach roads to Madgaon railway station get busy around train arrival times, with taxis and rickshaws queuing outside. Agree an exact meeting point for any handover so you are not circling the forecourt.

Out to the coast. Once clear of town, the roads west to the beaches are straightforward but narrow, shared with cyclists, buses and occasionally cattle. After dark, many are poorly lit, so plan to finish longer drives before sunset where you can.

Two short drives from Margao

Colva and Benaulim

Drive west for about 6–7 km to Colva, one of South Goa’s best-known beaches, then follow the coast road south to Benaulim, a quieter village beach with fishing boats drawn up on the sand. Both have parking near the beach approach. It is an easy first drive to get used to the car.

Chandor and Loutolim

For heritage rather than sand, head east to Chandor, roughly 12–15 km away, home to grand Portuguese-era mansions, some of which are open to visitors. Return via Loutolim, another village of old ancestral houses, for a slow, scenic loop through paddy fields.

Which cars suit Margao and South Goa

South Goa involves longer distances between beaches, so comfort and space matter more than they do in the north.

  • Long-distance comfort: the BMW 520d is a refined executive saloon for business trips or relaxed drives down to Palolem.
  • Families with luggage: the BMW X5 or Land Rover Defender 110 handle rail luggage and beach gear with ease.
  • Coastal weekends for two: the Mercedes-Benz C300 Cabriolet suits the quieter South Goa coast roads.

Margao car rental FAQs

Can I collect a car at Madgaon railway station? Delivery on request may be possible at the station. Share your train number and expected arrival time when you book, and our team will confirm whether a handover there can be arranged, and any charge, before you travel.

How far is Margao from Colva and Benaulim? Colva is roughly 6–7 km west of Margao and Benaulim a similar distance, usually 15–20 minutes by car outside peak hours. Both make easy outings, and you can link them along the coast road in a single afternoon.

Is Margao a good base for exploring South Goa? Yes. It sits close to the main southern beaches and heritage villages such as Chandor and Loutolim, and is around 25–35 minutes from Dabolim airport. Palolem and the far south are further, so allow a full day and return before dark where possible.

Can I drive the car to North Goa from Margao? Yes. Kilometres are unlimited anywhere within Goa, so a trip to Panjim or the northern beaches is fine. Allow time for traffic on the highway and bridges. Travel outside Goa, including into Karnataka, must be agreed with our team in advance.
