Luxury Car Wanders

Luxury Car Rental in Goa for International Tourists

Goa is one of the few places in India where driving yourself is a relaxed way to travel: distances are short and a car lets you move between beaches, villages and restaurants on your own timetable. This guide explains what overseas visitors need to rent a luxury car with Luxury Car Wanders, how payment and deposits work, and what driving in Goa is actually like.

We are a self-drive rental company based near Goa Dabolim Airport, operating since 2020. Our cars are for use within Goa.

Your driving licence and International Driving Permit

To drive in India as a visitor, you need two documents together:

  1. Your full, valid driving licence from your home country.
  2. An International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. India recognises the 1949 version. An IDP issued under the 1926 or 1968 conventions may not be accepted.

The IDP is a translation and validation of your home licence, not a licence on its own, so you must carry both whenever you drive. Three practical points:

  • Get your IDP before you leave home. IDPs can only be issued in the country that issued your licence. You cannot obtain one after arriving in India. In the UK they are bought in person at shops offering PayPoint (check GOV.UK for current issuers); in the US, by AAA or the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA). Other countries have their own authorised issuers, usually national motoring organisations.
  • Check the dates. Make sure both your licence and IDP are valid for the full length of your rental.
  • Carry your passport and visa too. Keep your passport, with a valid Indian visa or e-visa, alongside your licence and IDP. Police may ask to see them at roadside checks.

Documents we ask for

When you collect the car, please have the following ready:

  • Valid home-country driving licence
  • 1949-Convention International Driving Permit
  • Passport with a valid Indian visa or e-visa
  • A credit or debit card for the security deposit

Minimum driver age and any rules for additional drivers are confirmed at booking. All named drivers must show their own licence and IDP.

Deposits, payment and currency

All our prices and deposits are in Indian rupees (INR). Each car carries a refundable security deposit, which is returned after the vehicle has been inspected at drop-off.

International cards: please tell us when you enquire if you will be paying with a card issued outside India, so we can confirm how the deposit is taken — for example as a pre-authorisation (a hold on your card) or as a charge that is refunded. Two tips:

  • Tell your bank you are travelling. Indian transactions are sometimes declined by overseas card issuers as a fraud precaution.
  • Expect exchange-rate differences. Prices are in INR; your bank sets the exchange rate and may add a foreign-transaction fee. A refunded deposit can therefore come back as a slightly different amount in your home currency.

Insurance cover and any excess are explained at booking.

Driving in Goa: what to expect

Traffic keeps left

India drives on the left, with right-hand-drive cars, as in the UK, Ireland and Australia. If you are used to driving on the right, take the first few kilometres slowly, and be especially careful at roundabouts and when turning across traffic.

The horn is a conversation

A short tap of the horn is used to say “I’m here” — when overtaking, approaching a blind bend or passing a scooter. It is not usually aggressive. Scooters filter on both sides, so check mirrors constantly.

Animals on the road

Cows, buffalo and dogs often rest on or wander across roads, even the highway. Slow down and give them room; the UK government notes that accidents involving cows can draw crowds.

Avoid driving at night where you can

Many village roads are unlit, with unmarked speed breakers and unlit cyclists. Plan longer drives for daylight.

Monsoon season

Goa’s monsoon usually runs from about June to September, with heavy rain making roads slippery and causing occasional flooding and potholes. Allow extra time, keep speeds down and avoid flooded stretches.

Zero alcohol

India’s legal limit is 30 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, much lower than in many countries. Police run checks, particularly in North Goa’s nightlife areas. Do not drink at all if you are driving.

Arriving by air: Dabolim or Mopa

Goa has two international airports, and which one you land at shapes your first day.

  • Goa International Airport, Dabolim (GOI) is near Vasco da Gama in central-south Goa, and where we are based. From here it is roughly 45–55 minutes to Panjim, 25–35 minutes to Margao and 75–90 minutes to Calangute. See our Goa Dabolim Airport page for arrival delivery on request.
  • Manohar International Airport, Mopa (GOX) is in Pernem, far North Goa, and opened in 2023. It is roughly 50–60 minutes to Panjim and 35–45 minutes to Calangute and Baga. Flying into Mopa? Ask us about collection options.

Drive times are approximate and traffic-dependent. After a long-haul flight, consider a taxi to your hotel and a car delivered the next morning, after a night’s sleep.

When to book

  • 4–8 weeks before travel: for peak season (mid-December to early January) and for specific cars such as the Defender or Mustang, enquire early.
  • 4–6 weeks before travel: apply for your IDP if you do not already have one, and check your passport and visa.
  • 1–2 weeks before travel: confirm your flight details, delivery location and payment method with our team.
  • Before you fly: pack your licence, IDP and passport in your hand luggage, not your checked bag.

Our cancellation terms are confirmed at booking.

Frequently asked questions

Can foreigners rent a self-drive car in Goa? Yes. Overseas visitors can rent with Luxury Car Wanders if they hold a valid home-country driving licence and a 1949-Convention International Driving Permit, plus a passport with a valid Indian visa. A credit or debit card is needed for the refundable security deposit.

Can I get an International Driving Permit after I arrive in India? No. An IDP must be issued in the same country as your driving licence, before you travel. In the UK, IDPs are sold in person at PayPoint outlets; in the US, from AAA or AATA. Check that your IDP is the 1949 Convention version, which India recognises.

Can I pay with a foreign credit card? Please tell us at the enquiry stage if your card was issued outside India, and we will confirm how payment and the deposit will be handled. Prices are in INR; your bank sets the exchange rate and may add fees.

Is it difficult to drive on the left in Goa? Most visitors from right-hand-traffic countries adjust within a day. Start on quieter roads and take roundabouts slowly. Scooter traffic and animals on the road are bigger adjustments, so drive defensively and avoid night driving at first.

Can I drive the rental car to other states? Our cars are for use within Goa, where kilometres are unlimited. Any travel outside Goa must be agreed with our team in advance, so please ask before you plan an interstate trip.

Which airport should I fly into? Either works. Dabolim is closer to Panjim and South Goa and is where we are based. Mopa is closer to the northern beaches such as Calangute, Baga and Anjuna. If you land at Mopa, ask us about collection options before booking your flight.

Is a security deposit charged on every rental? Yes. Every car has a refundable security deposit in INR, ranging from ₹20,000 to ₹50,000 depending on the model. It is returned after the car has been inspected at drop-off.
